The Jorgensens, led by a husband-and-wife duo, have been making music together for nearly a decade; Brianna Tagg met Kurt Jorgensen in 2014 in St. Paul, MN. They embarked on a musical collaboration that led to ever stronger bonds: from going sober together to getting married and having a child. Their band also blossomed with the additions of Andra Lee Suchy (vocals), Brenda Lee King (bass), Jeff King (saxophone and clarinet), Jeff Levine (trumpet), Mark O’ Day (drums and percussion), and C Harris (percussion).

Over time, their virtuosic musical chops and down-to-earth sound have drawn fans and accolades as they blend blues, country and jazz into a sound aptly summed up by the title of their latest album, Americana Soul. The record exemplifies the way a close relationship can infuse music with rich emotional resonance and joy.

For the single “Leave Your Light On,” the duo decided to pare back their full-band sound in a rendition of an old tune. “While we were recording Americana Soul, the idea came to breathe new life into the song,” Brianna explains. “We wrote new lyrics and simplified the production so it became more about telling a story of two people coming together than jamming elaborate solos.”

It’s an interesting choice for a song that was “a jam in the band” many years ago, according to Kurt. “It seemed strange to leave out horns, percussion, and stacked vocals, but as we sat and listened it became clear that the simplicity of the acoustic guitar and dobro was all we needed. We allowed those instruments to do the talking on this track.”

The resulting track is a laid-back, romantic delight. An irresistible easy groove, simple lyrics and minimal instrumentation let the Jorgensens’ soulful harmonies shine.

The video is equally fun and relaxed, juxtaposing shots of a bright blue vintage car driving through countryside with the duo playing and singing in a sunny empty room with wood floor and walls. The warm, saturated colors make you almost feel the heat of sunshine on your skin—a sorely needed sensation in this cold, snowy Minnesota winter.
